Todays ride we decided to ride north up the Pacific coast. We are in a heatwave right now so avoiding riding our normal inland route since temperatures there were expected to be over 100 degrees. On the coast it still got up into the low 90’s. Our 100 mile ride had us going from Carlsbad, through Camp Pendleton (US Marine Corp Base) then through the small towns of San Clemente, Dana Point, Laguna Beach and turning around at Newport Beach for a grand total of 101 miles. This ride was just basic endurance building, putting the miles in.

Since I do a lot of different bike workouts I wanted to start a blog detailing some of the different workouts I do on the bike each week.

We are extremely lucky here in Southern California to have some exceptional climbs and one of the most spectacular climbs we have is the Palomar Mountain climb. This climb is 11.6 miles (18.5km) long and averages 7% grade the whole climb and rises 3800ft from start to finish.

Today I started from Harrah’s Casino which is 1.5 miles from the start of the climb so the total length of the ride was only 27 miles but took a total of 2 hours and 20 minutes. Despite a 6:45am start by the time I got to the top it was 85 degrees and 95 degrees by the time I finished.

Total time for the climb was 1 hour 39 minutes, a solid effort but far off my best of 67 minutes which I did 20 years ago.
